Waterfall Forest, x2

Waterfall Forest (4x4")
Waterfall Forest 2 (4x4")

Here's 2 more in my series titles "learning from our mistakes". If you like, we can also play a fun little game called "what is that even supposed to be?". If you can't tell (I don't blame you!), it's a waterfall in the forest.

I think I picked a subject that was beyond my skill level, in terms of color and especially in terms of 3d shapes. My brush work just isn't good enough yet for this stuff, and that's where my trouble started.

I got so frustrated trying to get all those rocks and tiny waterfalls right that I lost track of my colors and it ended up as a muddy mess. You can tell by the way I did the greenery in the first one - at that point I just wanted it to be over. It's turning out to be a pattern for me - if I don't think a painting is going well I get frustrated and rush it, and it ends up being a self-fulfilling prophecy. On the bright side, it means I don't waste too much time on a painting that's beyond saving.

I tried again the next day. I cropped it a little closer to avoid all the boring greenery, but I ended up with the exact same problems. I didn't manage to paint the shapes of all those rocks in a way that looks good, and I ended up using the exact same colors I used the first time!

Looking back now, the biggest problem in terms of color is the fact that I forgot about a warm/cool balance. I used green, yellow and orange, meaning I used only about 1/4 of the color wheel without any complementary colors. The result is an uncomfortable sepia feel to the whole thing. I hate sepia.
