Guinea Fowl
You may well ask "what on earth is that?!"
Turns out it's called a Guinea Fowl. They come from a whole family of freaky looking chicken-ish birds. Google them at your own risk.
I painted this off a stock picture and really liked the off-beat composition. It's not framed like a portrait, in fact the bird almost leaves the edge of the frame on the left. It's awkward but also makes the picture feel like a lucky snapshot, as if someone barely managed to capture this moment before it slipped away.
I really wanted to capture the odd expression and framing so I made a few sketches even though I hate drawing. Characters (like animals) are a lot less forgiving of mistakes in terms of proportions and angles compared to landscapes, so I did a few test runs to make sure I captured it. That subtle head tilt especially gave me trouble:
